The opposition party demands a review of the disputed sanction, insisting that political advertising regulations should apply equally to all parties.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Plateau State has challenged the state government and the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) over what it described as selective enforcement of Executive Order 003, following a reported fine imposed on the party and its governorship candidate over political posters.
The party is demanding the withdrawal or suspension of the disputed sanction pending a fair review, alleging that the enforcement action raises concerns about the equal treatment of opposition parties.
Speaking at a press conference in Jos on Saturday, the ADC State Publicity Secretary, Silas Audu Wettok, said the party was concerned that its campaign materials had attracted sanctions while posters bearing the images of Governor Caleb Mutfwang and President Bola Tinubu allegedly remained displayed on public facilities within the same restricted area.
Wettok said the party recognised the need to protect public infrastructure and maintain environmental cleanliness but insisted that regulations governing political advertisements must be applied consistently, regardless of party affiliation.
The ADC called on the JMDB and the Plateau State Government to explain the alleged disparity and ensure that the directive was enforced equally against the ADC, the All Progressives Congress and other political parties. It also requested a transparent review of the implementation of the executive order.
The party further questioned the urgency of the enforcement action in comparison with what it described as the continuing security challenges confronting residents of Plateau State. It urged the government to prioritise the protection of lives and property alongside the enforcement of legitimate regulations.
On its preparations for the 2027 elections, the ADC said it was strengthening its structures across the state’s 17 local government areas, wards and electoral units. The party also expressed confidence in its governorship candidate, retired Brigadier General John Sunday Sura, saying he had the experience to address insecurity and promote development.
The party maintained that the disputed sanction would not deter its participation in the democratic process and urged its members to remain calm and law-abiding. It called on the state government and the JMDB to review the matter and ensure that the enforcement of Executive Order 003 was transparent and free from political discrimination.
