Nigeria is set to adopt 112 as its single national, toll-free emergency number, in a move aimed at making it easier and faster for citizens to access urgent assistance during critical situations.

The initiative by the Federal Government is designed to end the confusion created by multiple emergency hotlines operated by different agencies and provide Nigerians with one number to remember whenever they require immediate help.

Under the new arrangement, members of the public will be able to dial 112 to report emergencies including fires, road crashes, medical crises, security threats and other situations requiring urgent intervention from relevant authorities.

The move is expected to significantly improve the coordination and speed of emergency responses, particularly when lives are at risk. Instead of trying to determine which agency’s hotline to call, citizens would have a single point of contact for emergency assistance.

The Federal Government’s decision also reflects growing concerns over delays that can occur when people facing emergencies struggle to identify or reach the appropriate response agency. A unified emergency number is intended to simplify the process and help direct distress calls to the appropriate responders.
