Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted more than 1.3 million pills of tramadol and other opioids and about 6,000 kilograms of cannabis in a series of operations across several states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The agency said the seized drugs have a combined street value of more than ₦3.4 billion.

The operations were carried out in Lagos, Edo, Niger, Delta, Ondo, Gombe, Imo and the FCT, according to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi in a statement on Sunday.

Among the seizures was 1.1 million assorted tramadol tablets and capsules, alongside codeine syrup, methamphetamine and Exol tablets, recovered from two suspects, Aminu Isyaku, 23, and Jamilu Habibu, 25.

The suspects were arrested on Friday, September 18, along the Abaji-Abuja Highway while allegedly transporting the drugs from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Mararaba, Nasarawa State.

The drugs were concealed in eight sacks.

In Lagos, NDLEA operatives arrested Onyeka Ofor, who was allegedly found with 48,900 pills of tramadol 225mg at his residence in Aguda, Surulere, on September 18.

Also in Lagos, seven cartons of cannabis sativa weighing 59 kilograms were intercepted at a logistics company, leading to the arrest of a suspect identified as Luke Ugokwe.

Another suspect, Ibrahim Hudu, 43, was arrested at Apongbo on September 17 with 998.38 kilograms of nitrous oxide gas, the agency said.

In Gombe State, NDLEA operatives recovered 154,480 capsules of tramadol from two suspects, Sabi’u Umar, 27, and Hassana Muhammad, 19. They were arrested separately at the Barunde area and Gombe main market on September 18.

In Imo State, 25-year-old Ifesinachi Godwin was arrested along the Owerri-Onitsha Road with 43.85 kilograms of skunk, according to the agency.

In Ondo State, four suspects identified as Blessing Effiong, Saviour Peter, David Friday Sunday and Ability Peter Sunday were arrested during a raid on a two-hectare cannabis farm in Ita-Ogbolu Forest.

The NDLEA said about 5,000 kilograms of skunk was destroyed at the farm, while 48 kilograms of dry and fresh cannabis was recovered for prosecution of the suspects.

The agency also reported the arrest of three young men in Niger State after weapons were allegedly found in their possession.

Bashir Usman, 20, Abubakar Nuhu, 18, and Abdulrahman Abdulwahab, 18, were arrested along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway at Chachi, Tafa Local Government Area, on September 15.

NDLEA said officers recovered two locally fabricated AK-47 rifles and a magazine, a locally made pistol with a magazine and nine rounds of 9mm ammunition concealed in a black travel bag.

The agency said its commands and formations also continued drug-abuse sensitisation activities under its War Against Drug Abuse programme during the week.

NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.), commended the officers involved in the operations and urged them to sustain their intelligence-driven approach to drug control.
