President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the management of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) to aggressively curb gas flaring and channel the nation’s natural gas reserves toward driving domestic economic growth.
Speaking at the State House during a visit from the NLNG Board, led by Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Engineer Adeleye Falade, President Tinubu emphasized that environmental hazards must be transformed into economic benefits for ordinary Nigerians.
“My major concern is domestic utilization, where you must be able to take out the flaring and convert potential environmental liability into what could be strategically and economically beneficial to consumers in the country,” the President stated.
While commending NLNG for expanding its operational capacity and yielding strong returns on investment, President Tinubu urged the leadership to prioritize affordable domestic energy access alongside international exports. He pledged the government’s readiness to provide further fiscal incentives to stimulate capacity expansion and long-term sector growth.
Briefing the President on the company’s trajectory, NLNG Managing Director Engineer Adeleye Falade revealed that the company has generated over $150 billion in revenue since its inception. Out of this, shareholders—including the Federal Government of Nigeria, which holds a 49 percent stake—have received roughly $47 billion in dividends.
Falade noted that all Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) produced by the company is currently dedicated to the domestic market. Addressing recent operational upgrades, he explained that improved crude production and improved security conditions allowed NLNG to scale up operations from four to five operational trains, moving past previous capacity limitations.
Key highlights from the meeting include:
- Train 7 Expansion: NLNG is preparing to inaugurate its Train 7 project, expected to boost production capacity by 35 percent. NLNG currently holds a 5 percent share of the global LNG market.
- Investor Confidence: Stable fiscal policy and improved security in oil-producing regions have bolstered investor confidence, encouraging continued foreign direct investment.
- Infrastructure Milestones: The NLNG-financed Bonny-Bodo Road and Bridge project is fully complete and awaiting official commissioning to improve local transport and commerce.
The delegation included NLNG Deputy Managing Director Olakunle Osobu, TotalEnergies Country Chair Matthieu Bouyer, Nigeria Agip Exploration Managing Director Maurizio Pinna, and senior government officials, including Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris.
