Otunba Segun Showunmi, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Ogun State and former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has been included in the media and strategic communication structure of President Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general election.
His name appeared in a revised membership list of the campaign council released on Tuesday, October 13, according to reports by Nigerian media organisations. The development has drawn attention because of his previous involvement in Atiku’s political communication efforts during the 2023 presidential election.
Showunmi is also known as the convener of The Alternative Movement, a platform associated with his participation in national political discussions. His reported inclusion places him within the wider communication structure being assembled for Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
The media and strategic communication directorate is responsible for coordinating campaign messaging, handling media engagements and communicating the campaign’s policies, positions and activities to the public. The revised list brings together political figures and communication professionals as the APC prepares for the next presidential election.
The campaign council was initially announced in August, with former Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari named Director-General and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma appointed secretary. The APC subsequently released an expanded list containing additional appointments and adjustments to the campaign structure.
Other prominent figures included in the revised council, according to media reports, are Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola. Their listed roles form part of the campaign’s broader mobilisation and coordination arrangements.
Showunmi’s reported inclusion is notable because of his previous association with Atiku, who challenged Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election. However, his appearance on the campaign list should not be interpreted as confirmation of a formal defection from the PDP unless he or the relevant party authorities independently confirm such a move.
