Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has warned lawmakers against allowing political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections to undermine their legislative responsibilities, unveiling a proposed 100-day programme to accelerate work on pending bills and committee reports.
Abbas gave the warning on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, as the House resumed plenary at the National Assembly in Abuja following its annual recess and the rehabilitation of the legislative chamber. He urged members to attend plenary and committee sittings regularly, stressing that their constituents expected a full term of service from their elected representatives.
The Speaker called on lawmakers to put national interest above personal ambitions and party affiliations, insisting that political competition must not take precedence over their constitutional duties. He also urged public institutions involved in the electoral process to remain neutral and perform their responsibilities in accordance with the law.
Under the proposed 100-day legislative programme, committees would be expected to conclude pending reports within defined timelines, while Tuesdays and Thursdays would be prioritised for major bills and urgent national issues. Abbas also announced plans to publish a comprehensive legislative scorecard and legacy report before the end of the 10th National Assembly.
He disclosed that by mid-June 2026, the House had received 2,747 bills and passed 363. According to him, the proportion of bills passed had increased from approximately seven per cent in the Assembly’s first session to about 26 per cent in its third session. He cautioned, however, that legislative performance should not be measured by the number of bills passed alone, but by their impact on Nigerians.
Among the outstanding priorities, Abbas identified the completion of the constitutional review process, including proposals on state police and reserved seats for women. He also urged the Executive to submit the Medium Term Expenditure Framework promptly to allow sufficient time for consideration of the 2027 budget. The Speaker further pledged continued scrutiny of the extended implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act.
Abbas said the remaining period of the 10th Assembly would be critical to completing priority legislation, strengthening oversight and ensuring that public resources were properly managed. He urged lawmakers to remain focused on their mandate until the end of their tenure, warning that the approaching election season must not come at the expense of public service.
