The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Taraba State University chapter (ASUU-TSU), has commenced an indefinite strike over the state government’s failure to implement an agreed remuneration framework and pay outstanding salary arrears.

The union announced that the industrial action took effect immediately on Monday, October 12, 2026, following what it described as prolonged delays despite previous engagements with the Taraba State Government.

ASUU-TSU is demanding the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU remuneration agreement at the university and the payment of all accrued salary arrears from January 2026 until the agreed salary structure is fully implemented.

According to the union, discussions with the state government began in February 2026 and led to the establishment of a verification committee to assess salary structures and implementation across tertiary institutions in the North-East. The committee’s report was presented in September, while a separate tripartite committee subsequently assessed the financial implications and outstanding arrears.

The union said the government requested additional time to resolve the matter, prompting it to suspend its planned industrial action in the interest of industrial harmony. However, it said the continued delay after the completion of the verification and financial assessment processes left it with no option but to commence the strike.

Despite the industrial action, ASUU-TSU said it remained open to meaningful dialogue with the government and other stakeholders. It maintained, however, that any further engagement must be sincere, timely and directed towards a clear resolution of the dispute.

The union called on the Taraba State Government to implement the agreed remuneration framework and settle all outstanding arrears. It said the dispute was about fair treatment, the dignity of university workers and the fulfilment of commitments reached in good faith.
