With 2.3 million registered voters, 15 candidates, and a fiercely contested race, Osun State went to the polls today. The election was conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) across the 30 local government areas of the South-West state.

A displeased resident said that the high number of registered voters at the polling unit made the process very slow and frustrating. A total of 981 voters are registered at the polling unit.

The INEC official, Suzan Adebimpe, said a total of 457 voters were accredited for the governorship election.

4:10 p.m. The Osun State Deputy Governor and Accord Party deputy governorship candidate, Kola Adewusi, has described the ongoing governorship election as peaceful despite an earlier disruption at his polling unit, Ward 2, Unit 1, located at the Enuwa Palace frontage, directly opposite the palace of the Ooni of Ife in Ile-Ife.

12:19 p.m. – Violence at Polling Unit 13, Ward 4, in Ejigbo LGA was said to have ensued after a youth found vote-buying materials allegedly belonging to the APC. According to him, they seized the materials because they could not watch illegality occur without doing anything about it. But in retaliation, the persons to whom the materials allegedly belong arrived to whisk him away.

12:02 p.m. Voting has stopped at Polling Unit 13, Ward 4, in Ejigbo LGA due to the eruption of violence. INEC officials as well as residents are scampering to safety.

11:57 a.m. The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Najeem Salaam, has raised concerns over the alleged denial of accreditation of ADC party agents in some polling units. According to him, the names of these agents were duly uploaded. He also claimed that the repeated denial of accreditation is a failure on the part of INEC.

11:53 a.m. Imole Campaign Council spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, says the election has been peaceful and orderly, despite a delay in the functionality of the BVAS device at his polling unit in Ijebu Ijesa, Oriade LGA. He also alleges that he received a report that some hoodlums planned to invade the unit and disrupt the process.

10:31 a.m. The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Osun State governorship election, Erale Samuel Etaifo, says about 100 people from neighbouring Ondo and Ekiti states are in custody over alleged plans to disrupt the election. He adds that no arrests have been made so far today in connection with electoral violence.
