African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has challenged President Bola Tinubu over the rising cost of living, saying he would withdraw from the ticket of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and campaign for Tinubu if petrol sells for ₦600 per litre.

Amaechi, who is Atiku’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election, made the statement on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today. The ADC had formally submitted the names of Atiku and Amaechi as its presidential and vice-presidential candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The former Rivers State governor criticised the economic impact of the removal of the petrol subsidy, arguing that Nigerians were still facing difficulties because of the cost of transportation and other essential goods. He challenged the administration to demonstrate that the benefits of its economic reforms were reaching ordinary citizens.

Amaechi said he was prepared to personally visit a filling station to verify the price of petrol. He declared that if the pump price dropped to ₦600 per litre, he would withdraw as Atiku’s running mate and campaign for President Tinubu in the 2027 election.

“If fuel has come down to 600 I will campaign for President Tinubu,” Amaechi said, adding that he would personally purchase petrol at a filling station to establish whether the price had actually fallen to that level.

Amaechi also criticised the administration over its economic performance and questioned whether Nigerians were experiencing the improvements being highlighted by the government. In a separate part of the interview, he challenged the administration to identify major projects it had completed, while also making allegations about corruption that remain his political assessment.

Speaking about the 2027 presidential election, Amaechi characterised the contest in stark terms, arguing that Nigerians would have to make a choice about the direction of the country. He said, “Tinubu represents the choice of death,” a political characterisation made by Amaechi during the television interview.
